Body Image in Their Eyes Were Watching God by Arturo Armndariz and Fernando Echeverri

Body Image in Their Eyes Were Watching God

Janie:
"The men noticed her firm buttocks like she had grape fruits in her hip pockets; the great rope of black hair swinging to her waist and unraveling in the wind like a plume; then her pugnacious breasts bore holes in her shirt." (Hurston 2)

This is one of the first references to body image in their Their Eyes Were Watching God. Because of such a fast reference to body image, we were able to realize that body image will be a factor throughout the book.

Logan Killicks:
Here are quotes in which Janie and Nanny speak about Logan after Janie's recent marriage in chapter 3.

"... Ah wants to want him sometimes." (Hurston 23)Then Nanny said "If you don't want him..." (Hurston 23)

“...his belly is too big too, now, and his toe-nails look lak mule foots.” (Hurston 24)

These quotes imply that Janie has lost passion for Logan, because there is no physical attraction for Logan, besides the fact that janie feels she was forced to marry Logan by her grandmother.
